Spanish grammar

Salir de, llegar a, subir a, bajar de

Say where you leave from, where you arrive and how you get on and off.

From the scene Salimos de Madrid (We leave Madrid)

In short

Leave with salir de, arrive at a place with llegar a (not en). Get on with subir a, off with bajar de.

Your turn

Which one goes with I've just got out of the taxi?

Options: no sale de Madrid · ¿podemos subir al de las diez? · acabo de bajar del taxi

Show answer

I've just got out of the taxi → acabo de bajar del taxi

How it works

Verbs of movement come with their own preposition. Salir de means to leave a place: el tren no sale de Madrid.

Good to know

Llegar a means to get to a place: llegamos a Galicia, not llegamos en Galicia.

Good to know

With vehicles, subir a is to get on or in, and bajar de is to get off or out. A + el becomes al, and de + el becomes del.
