Spanish grammar

Cuando + preterite, ya + pluperfect

Put two past events in order: what had already happened.

From the scene Cuando llegué, ya habían… (When I arrived, they had already…)

In short

Order two past events: cuando + preterite for the later one, ya + había + participle for the earlier one.

Your turn

Which one goes with they had already finished?

Options: cuando llegamos, ya había cerrado · ya se había ido · ya habían terminado

Show answer

they had already finished → ya habían terminado

How it works

To order two past events, use cuando + the preterite for the later event, and ya + había/habían + participle for what had already happened before it: cuando llegamos, ya había cerrado.

when we arrived, it had already closed cuando llegamos, ya había cerrado
