Cuando + indicative vs + subjunctive

Contrast cuando for the past (indicative) and cuando for the future (subjunctive).

From the scene Cuando sea mayor (When I grow up)

In short

Cuando about the past or habits: indicative (cuando era niño). About the future: subjunctive (cuando sea mayor).

Your turn

Which one goes with when you were a kid (past)?

Options: cuando era niño · cuando sea mayor · cuando eras niño

Show answer

when you were a kid (past) → cuando eras niño

How it works

Cuando about the past or a habit takes the normal (indicative) form: cuando era niño (when I was a kid).

Good to know

Cuando about something that hasn't happened yet takes the subjunctive: cuando sea mayor (when I grow up) — English says "when" both times.
