How it works
You know the periodo ipotetico with se + congiuntivo imperfetto + condizionale for an unlikely present (se piovesse...).

For an impossible PAST condition, Italian instead uses se + congiuntivo trapassato + condizionale passato: se l'avessi saputo, sarei venuta prima (if I had known, I would have come earlier).
