Italian grammar
Preposizione + cui / il quale, la quale
Say 'that / who' after a preposition, using cui / il quale.
From the scene Il vestito con cui mi sono sposato (The suit I got married in)
In short
After a preposition use cui, never che: il vestito con cui mi sono sposato.
Your turn
Which one goes with the friend you lent it to?
Options: la donna con cui si è sposato · l'amico a cui l'ha prestato · il vestito con cui mi sono sposato
Show answer
the friend you lent it to → l'amico a cui l'ha prestato
How it works
After a preposition (con, a, di, per…) you can't just use che — use cui (invariable, for people and things) or il quale / la quale / i quali / le quali (agrees with the noun).
Good to know
Il vestito CON CUI mi sono sposato, l'amico A CUI l'ha prestato. English drops 'that' and moves the preposition to the end — Italian never does.
