Italian grammar

Il mio, la tua, il suo

Say "mine", "yours" or "his/hers" instead of repeating the noun.

From the scene Il mio è blu (Mine is blue)

In short

To avoid repeating a noun, use il / la / i / le + mio, tuo, suo: il mio è blu.

  • mine (l'ombrello) il mio
  • yours (tu, la memoria) la tua
  • yours (Lei) il suo
  • his (gli ombrelli) i suoi

Your turn

Which one goes with yours (tu, la memoria)?

Options: la tua · il mio · il suo

Show answer

yours (tu, la memoria) → la tua

How it works

To say "mine / yours / his / hers" without repeating the noun, use il/la/i/le + mio, tuo, suo, agreeing with the noun's gender and number: l'ombrello → il mio.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

No, quello rosso non è (blank).

Options: il tuo · il mio

Show answer

No, quello rosso non è il mio.

No, the red one isn't mine.

Good to know

Suo covers his, hers and yours (Lei).

Watch out

When "mine" stands alone as the subject or object — il mio è blu — the article is required: never "mio è blu".

Common mistake

Not il tuo here. Nuria uses Lei with Signora Elena, so 'yours' = il suo.

Quello è il suo, signora Elena. Lo riconosco.

That one is yours, Signora Elena. I recognise it.
