Italian grammar

Glielo, gliela; me lo, me la

Say who gave what back to whom, using double pronouns.

From the scene Gliel'ha restituito (He gave it back to him)

In short

To whom comes first, then what. Gli / le become glie- and join on: gliel'ho restituita.

Your turn

Which one goes with I gave it back to you (la padella)?

Options: gliel'ha restituito · me l'ha restituita · gliel'ho restituita

Show answer

I gave it back to you (la padella) → gliel'ho restituita

How it works

Two pronouns go before the verb: first "to whom", then "what".

Good to know

Mi and ti become me and te (me l'ha restituita), while gli / le (to him, to her, to you-Lei) become glie- and join the second pronoun in one word: glielo, gliela, glieli (gliel'ho restituita).

he gave it back to you (lo zucchero) gliel'ha restituito

Don Ramón gave it back to you last night, remember?

Options: Gliel'ho restituita · Glieli ha restituiti · Gliel'ha restituito

Watch out

With avere the participle agrees with the "what" pronoun — gliel'ho restituita for la padella, glieli ho restituiti for i manghi.

Common mistake

Not me l' or te l' here. To you (Lei) — lo zucchero.

Don Ramón gliel'ha restituito ieri notte, ricorda?

Don Ramón gave it back to you last night, remember?
