Italian grammar
Essere vs stare + gerundio
Contrast a lasting trait with a temporary state.
From the scene È sonnambulo! (He’s a sleepwalker!)
In short
Essere says what someone is or their state (è addormentato). Stare + gerund says what they're doing now.
- he is a sleepwalker è sonnambulo
- he is asleep è addormentato
- is he awake? è sveglio?
- he's walking (right now) sta camminando
