How it works
When you pass on what someone says right now (for example on the phone), the verb keeps its own tense: «arrivo tardi» → dice che arriva tardi.
Good to know
For a yes/no question use chiede se (asks if / whether): «avete l'ascensore?» → chiede se abbiamo l'ascensore.
