Italian grammar

Avevo + participio, e chi li avrà…?

Say what had happened before, and guess what has happened.

From the scene Gli anelli sono spariti! (The rings have disappeared!)

In short

Avevo + participle = had already done. Avrà + participle = could have done (a guess).

Your turn

Which one goes with I had put them away?

Options: dove li avevi messi? · non ti avevo mai visto · li avevo messi via

Show answer

I had put them away → li avevo messi via

How it works

Avevo + participio (trapassato prossimo) tells what had already happened before a past moment: li avevo messi via (I had put them away).

Good to know

Avrà + participio (futuro anteriore) guesses what has happened: chi li avrà presi? (who could have taken them?).
