German grammar

Vor vs. seit + Zeit

Say how long ago something happened, and for how long.

From the scene Vor einer Woche (A week ago)

In short

Past + vor means ago. Present + seit means for something still true. Both take the dative.

  • an hour ago vor einer Stunde
  • for two days (still true) seit zwei Tagen
  • until summer bis zum Sommer
  • not any more nicht mehr

Your turn

Which one goes with for two days (still true)?

Options: bis zum Sommer · seit zwei Tagen · vor einer Stunde

Show answer

for two days (still true) → seit zwei Tagen

How it works

Past tense + vor + time (Dativ) = "ago": er hat mich vor einer Stunde angerufen.

Good to know

Present tense + seit + time (Dativ) = "for" something still true: ich bin seit zwei Tagen Schlosser.

an hour ago vor einer Stunde

not any more nicht mehr

Your turn

Watch out

For something still going on, seit takes the PRESENT tense in German, not the Perfekt, even though English says "I have been".

Common mistake

Not Seit here. A week ago.

Vor einer Woche hat alles angefangen.

It all started a week ago.
