German grammar

Perfekt + Präteritum zusammen erzählen

Tell someone about a trip, mixing tenses correctly.

From the scene Wie war die Reise? (How was the trip?)

In short

Tell trip events in the Perfekt, but keep war, hatte and konnte in the simple past.

Your turn

Which one goes with we went / she danced?

Options: es war · es waren vierzig Grad · wir sind gegangen / sie hat getanzt

Show answer

we went / she danced → wir sind gegangen / sie hat getanzt

How it works

A trip story mixes tenses: use the Perfekt for what happened (wir sind gegangen, sie hat getanzt) — this is how spoken German narrates events.

Good to know

But sein, haben, and modal verbs (war, hatte, konnte) usually stay in the Präteritum, even in speech: es war die beste Reise.

Good to know

You will also hear es ist schön gewesen, especially in the south, but es war is far more common.

it was es war

Nuria

Common mistake

Not war or wart here. Vierzig Grad is plural.

Als wir in Sevilla angekommen sind, waren es vierzig Grad.

When we got to Sevilla, it was forty degrees.
