Ich wollte, dass… / ich hatte gehofft, dass… (Indikativ)

Say what you wanted or hoped, and what bothered you.

From the scene Ich wollte, dass es eine Überraschung wird (I wanted it to be a surprise)

In short

Put wollen or hoffen in the past; the dass-clause keeps its normal verb form.

Your turn

Which one goes with I had hoped nobody would find out?

Options: ich wollte, dass es eine Überraschung wird · es hat mich geärgert, dass sie es ihr erzählt hat · ich hatte gehofft, dass niemand es erfährt

Show answer

I had hoped nobody would find out → ich hatte gehofft, dass niemand es erfährt

How it works

To say what you wanted, hoped or what annoyed you, put the first verb in the past — ich wollte, ich hatte gehofft (a hope that didn't come true), es hat mich geärgert — and keep the dass-clause in the normal form (the indicative).
