German grammar

Ich bin … vs. mir ist … + Adjektiv

Use German adjectives that change meaning between a lasting trait and a feeling right now.

From the scene Bist du bereit? (Are you ready?)

In short

Ich bin + adjective describes you. Mir ist + adjective says how you feel right now.

Your turn

Which one goes with I feel uneasy (right now)?

Options: mir ist ein bisschen schlecht · mir ist nicht wohl · ich bin schlau

Show answer

I feel uneasy (right now) → mir ist nicht wohl

How it works

Ich bin + adjective describes you: ich bin schlau, ich bin müde, ich bin langweilig (I'm boring).

Good to know

With a few feeling words, German uses mir ist + adjective (dative) for how you feel right now: mir ist schlecht (I feel sick), mir ist kalt, mir ist nicht wohl (I feel uneasy).

Good to know

So ich bin langweilig means I'm boring, but mir ist langweilig means I'm bored.

I'm clever (a trait) ich bin schlau

I feel uneasy (right now) mir ist nicht wohl
