Choose between für and zu correctly.

Für + accusative says who or which day something is for. Zu + dative names the occasion.

How it works

Für takes the accusative (the object form, as in mich, dich, einen) and says who something is for, or which day it is booked for.

Good to know

Zu takes the dative (the form with dem, der or mir, as after auf and neben) and names the occasion or purpose: zu deinem Geburtstag (for a birthday present, zum Geburtstag is the usual choice), and zum + a verb used as a noun means "for doing": perfekt zum Marzipanessen.
