German grammar
Einen Krimi erzählen: Präteritum + Plusquamperfekt
Tell the story of a crime, saying what had already happened before each moment.
From the scene Haltet den Dieb! (Stop, thief!)
In short
In a told story, the Präteritum moves events on. Hatte / war + participle steps back to what had already happened.
Your turn

Options: Ramón schrie · sie hatte alles gesehen · er war schon entkommen
Show answer
he had already escaped → er war schon entkommen
How it works
In a told story, the Präteritum moves events forward: Ramón schrie, die Polizei kam.
