German grammar
Der Apostroph: Arepas ohne, Pacos Bar, Tomás' Kaffeemaschine, gibt's
Use the apostrophe correctly: never in plurals, rarely with names, and for missing letters.
From the scene Arepa's? (There were lots of customers)
In short
No apostrophe in plurals. Names take a plain -s (Paco's allowed); names ending in an s sound take just an apostrophe.
Your turn
Which one goes with Paco's bar?
Options: Pacos Bar · Churros, Arepas · Nurias Buch
Show answer
Paco's bar → Pacos Bar
How it works
A plural never takes an apostrophe: Churros, Arepas. For possession, a name usually just adds -s: Nurias Buch, Pacos Bar.
Good to know
An apostrophe that shows the bare name, as in Paco's Bar, is allowed, but the plain -s is preferred.
Good to know
A name ending in an s sound gets only an apostrophe: Tomás' Kaffeemaschine. The apostrophe also marks a dropped letter: gibt's for gibt es.
