German grammar

Akkusativ vor Dativ, wenn beide Pronomen sind

Say who gave what back to whom, using double pronouns.

From the scene Er hat ihn Ihnen zurückgegeben (He gave it back to you)

In short

With two pronouns, the thing comes before the person: er hat ihn mir zurückgegeben.

Your turn

Which one goes with I gave it back to you (die Pfanne)?

Show answer

I gave it back to you (die Pfanne) → Ich habe sie Ihnen um acht zurückgegeben

How it works

When both objects are pronouns, the accusative (the thing) comes before the dative (the person): er hat ihn mir zurückgegeben (he gave it back to me).

he gave it back to me (den Zucker) Er hat ihn mir zurückgegeben

I gave it back to you (die Pfanne) Ich habe sie Ihnen um acht zurückgegeben

Ramón

Ich habe sie Ihnen um acht zurückgegeben. Und ganz sauber!

I gave it back to you at eight. And very clean!

Your turn

What fills the gap?

(blank).

Show answer

Ramón

Ich habe sie Ihnen um acht zurückgegeben. Und ganz sauber!

I gave it back to you at eight. And very clean!

he gave it back to me too (die Pflanze) Er hat sie mir auch zurückgegeben

Nuria

Drei: meine Pflanze. Er hat sie mir auch zurückgegeben.

Three: my plant. He gave it back to me too.

Your turn

Show answer

Nuria

Three: my plant. He gave it back to me too.

did you give them back to him? (die Mangos) Haben Sie sie ihm zurückgegeben?

Nuria

Haben Sie sie ihm zurückgegeben, Don Ramón?

Did you give them back to him, Don Ramón?

Your turn

What fills the gap?

Show answer

Nuria

Haben Sie sie ihm zurückgegeben, Don Ramón?

Did you give them back to him, Don Ramón?

Watch out

This is only for two pronouns — with a noun, the person-pronoun comes first: er hat mir den Zucker zurückgegeben.

Common mistake

Not ihm here. Den Zucker — to you (Sie).

Don Ramón gave it back to you last night, remember?
