French grammar

Tout se raconte : passé composé, imparfait, plus-que-parfait (révision)

Tell a story that mixes the passé composé, imparfait and plus-que-parfait naturally (review).

From the scene Tout ce qu'on a vécu (Everything we have lived through)

In short

A real story mixes tenses: passé composé for events, imparfait for how things were, plus-que-parfait for what came before.

Your turn

Which one goes with I was working?

Options: tout ce qu'on a vécu · Tomás s'est marié · je travaillais

Show answer

I was working → je travaillais

How it works

A real story mixes the past tenses.

Good to know

The passé composé for events and for looking back on what's happened (on a vécu, Tomás s'est marié), the imparfait for how things were (je travaillais, je ne connaissais personne), and the plus-que-parfait for what had already happened before that (tu avais déjà perdu tes clés). In speech, on = nous.
