Spanish grammar

Ser + participle (the action) vs estar + participle (the result)

Tell an action (fue cerrado) from the state it leaves behind (está cerrado).

From the scene Ya está cerrado (It's already closed)

In short

Ser + participle describes the action (fueron cerrados anoche). Estar + participle describes the result now (están cerrados).

Your turn

Which one goes with they are closed (now)?

Options: están cerrados · fueron cerrados anoche · la puerta está precintada

Show answer

they are closed (now) → están cerrados

How it works

Ser + participle describes the action itself, often with when or by whom: fueron cerrados anoche por la promotora.

Good to know

Estar + participle describes the state that results from it, what you find now: la puerta está precintada, la venta ya está firmada. The participle agrees in both.
