German grammar

Ich möchte + noun; sonst noch etwas?

Ask for things you want at the market.

From the scene Ich möchte Äpfel (I'd like some apples)

In short

Ask for things with ich möchte + noun. For not wanting something, use kein before the noun.

  • I'd like apples ich möchte Äpfel
  • I don't want oranges ich möchte keine Orangen
  • anything else? sonst noch etwas?
  • nothing else sonst nichts

Your turn

Which one goes with I don't want oranges?

Options: sonst noch etwas? · ich möchte keine Orangen · ich möchte Äpfel

Show answer

I don't want oranges → ich möchte keine Orangen

How it works

Ich möchte (I'd like) + a noun is the polite way to ask for things — ich will sounds pushy.

Good to know

The seller asks Sonst noch etwas? (anything else?); answer with another ich möchte... or Nein, sonst nichts (no, nothing else).

To say you don't want something, put kein before the noun: ich möchte keine Orangen (not nicht Orangen).
