German grammar

Habe, hast, hat

Say what you have and ask others.

From the scene Hast du ein Handy? (Do you have a phone?)

In short

Haben means to have: ich habe, du hast, er / sie hat. For not having, use kein / keine.

  • I have ich habe
  • you have du hast
  • he/she has er/sie hat

Your turn

Which one goes with you have?

Options: du hast · ich habe · er/sie hat

Show answer

you have → du hast

How it works

Haben = to have. Ich habe = I have, du hast = you have, er/sie hat = he/she has.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Hmm... nein, ich (blank) keine Karte.

Options: habe · hast

Show answer

Hmm... nein, ich habe keine Karte.

Hmm... no, I don't have a card.

Good to know

For “I don't have a…” use kein / keine: ich habe keine Karte. With a der-word, “a” becomes einen after haben: ich habe einen Pass.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Nein... aber meine Nachbarin (blank) eine Karte.

Options: hat · habe · hast

Show answer

Nein... aber meine Nachbarin hat eine Karte.

No... but my neighbour has a card.

I have ich habe

Nuria

Ja, ich habe einen Pass.

Yes, I have a passport.

Your turn

What fills the gap?

Ja, (blank) einen Pass.

Options: ich habe · du hast · sie hat

Show answer

Nuria

Ja, ich habe einen Pass.

Yes, I have a passport.

you have du hast

Your turn

What goes with du hast?

Options: you have · I have · he/she has

Show answer

du hast → you have

he/she has er/sie hat

Common mistake

Not Habe or Hat here. Javi asks Nuria.

Klar. Hast du einen Pass?

Sure. Do you have a passport?
