German grammar

Duzen, siezen, sich duzen — und warum es kein zärtliches Sie gibt

Talk about who says du or Sie to whom, and understand why a loving Sie sounds strange in German.

From the scene Duzen oder siezen? (Informal or formal 'you')

In short

Duzen means saying du, siezen means saying Sie. In German, Sie always means distance or respect.

Your turn

Which one goes with they say Sie to each other?

Options: Schatz, haben Sie schon gegessen? · ich sieze Ramón seit vierzig Jahren · die siezen sich

Show answer

they say Sie to each other → die siezen sich

How it works

You know du vs Sie; the verbs for it are duzen (to say du) and siezen (to say Sie); sich duzen / sich siezen = to say it to each other.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Ach was. In Antioquia ist das Sie auch etwas (blank).

Options: Zärtlich · Zärtlichen · Zärtliches

Show answer

Ach was. In Antioquia ist das Sie auch etwas Zärtliches.

Not at all. In Antioquia, Sie is also something affectionate.

Good to know

In Antioquia usted can be affectionate, even between spouses.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Mein Schatz, (blank) Sie einen kleinen Kaffee?

Options: möchte · möchten · möchtest

Show answer

Mein Schatz, möchten Sie einen kleinen Kaffee?

My love, would you like a little coffee?

Good to know

German has no affectionate Sie — Sie always means distance or respect, so a couple saying Sie sounds like a row (or a joke).

Good to know

This course renders it like this: Javi's parents' Colombian usted to each other stays Sie, so you feel Nuria's surprise.

Good to know

Javi says du to his parents; Frau Gloria says Sie to Nuria and puts the love into the words (Kindchen, Schatz).

Good to know

A mixed form exists: the 'Hamburger Sie', first name + Sie (Gloria, haben Sie …?).
