French grammar

J'ai mangé, je suis sorti(e)

Say what you did (passé composé with avoir or être).

From the scene J'ai mangé, je suis sortie (I ate, I went out)

In short

Most verbs take avoir: j'ai mangé. Sortir and revenir take être and agree: je suis sortie, elle est revenue.

  • I ate j'ai mangé
  • you went out tu es sorti(e)
  • she went out elle est sortie
  • I wrote j'ai écrit
  • she came back elle est revenue

Your turn

Which one goes with you went out?

Options: tu es sorti(e) · j'ai mangé · elle est sortie

Show answer

you went out → tu es sorti(e)

How it works

Most verbs form the passé composé with avoir + past participle: j'ai mangé (I ate), j'ai écrit (I wrote).

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Au bureau. Je ne (blank) pas sortie.

Clue: je

Options: es · est · suis

Show answer

Au bureau. Je ne suis pas sortie.

At the office. I didn't go out.

Good to know

But movement verbs like sortir and revenir use être instead, and the participle agrees with the subject: je suis sortie (said by a woman), elle est revenue (she came back).

I ate j'ai mangé

you went out tu es sorti(e)

Not Elle a sortie or Elle est sorti here. Elle (la patronne).

Oui. Elle est sortie avec ses amis.

Yes. She went out with her friends.
